 7. அறங்கேட்டற்காகார் இயல்பு 

 தன்சொல்லே மேற்படுப்பான் தண்டி தடிபிணக்கன் புன்சொல்லே போதரவு பார்த்திருப்பான்-இன்சொல்லை ஏன்றிருந்தும் கேளாத ஏழை எனஇவர்கட் கான்றவர்கள் கூறா ரறம். 

(பதவுரை) 

தன்சொல்லே மேல் படுப்பான்-தான் கூறியதே சிறந்ததென்று கூறுபவனும், தண்டி-மானமுள்ளவனும், 

தடிபிணக்கன்-மிக்க மாறுபாடு கொண்டவனும், 

புன் சொல்லே போதரவு பார்த்து இருப்பான்-பிறர் கூறும் இழிசொற்களின் வரவினையே எதிர்பார்த்து இருப்பவனும், இன்சொல்லை ஏன்று இருந்தும் - இன்பந்தரும் உறுதிமொழிகளைக் கேட்கக் காலமும் இடமும் வாய்த்தும், கேளாத ஏழை-கேளாத மூடனும், என இவர்கட்கு-ஆகிய இவர்களுக்கு, ஆன்றவர்கள்- பெரியோர்கள், 

அறம் கூறார்-அறநூலைச் சொல்லார்கள். 

(குறிப்பு) தடுமாற்றம்-அம் ஈற்றுத் தொழிற்பெயர். தடுமாறு: பகுதி; போதரவு-போதல்: தொழிற்பெயர்; 'நுண்ணுணர்வின்மை வறுமை' என்றாராகலின். ஏழை-மூடன்

7. The Nature of Those Unfit to Hear Righteous Counsel

Verse (English Translation):

He who asserts only his own words as right,
Who is proud, and deeply argumentative,
Who waits only to hear vile words from others,
And though having the chance to hear kind, wise speech, refuses to listen —
Such a fool is not one to whom the wise will speak of dharma (righteousness).

• தன்சொல்லே மேல் படுப்பான் – One who claims that only what he says is correct (considers his words superior to all others).

• இன்சொல்லை ஏன்று இருந்தும் – Though there is the opportunity (time and place) to hear kind and wise words,

• கேளாத ஏழை – He does not listen; such a person is called an "ezhai" (here meaning fool, not just poor).

• இவர்கட்கு – For these kinds of people,

• ஆன்றவர்கள் அறம் கூறார் – The wise (elders) do not speak to them of righteousness or moral wisdom (dharma).

• தடுமாற்றம் – A verbal noun (ending in -ம்) indicating confusion or being off-track.

• போதரவு – Derived from the verb "போதல்" meaning to speak or instruct; here it implies "expectation of abusive speech".

• ஏழை – Although often meaning "poor", here it refers to someone lacking in subtle discernment or insight — hence, a fool.

• This verse equates intellectual poverty or lack of discernment with unworthiness to receive dharma.

Essence of the Verse:

This is a moral teaching about who is unworthy of receiving ethical or spiritual instruction. People who are:

• Arrogant about their own opinions,

• Proud and argumentative,

• Expect only hostility or insults from others, and

• Ignore wise and kind words even when available,

…are not seen as fit recipients of righteous guidance. The wise will refrain from teaching them, as they lack the disposition to benefit from such instruction.
